Fairest Lord Jesus

The supremacy of Christ is proclaimed in a hymn written by the Apostle Paul in Colossians 1:15-20. “Fairest Lord Jesus” seems like a paraphrase of Paul’s message. Another hymn by Paul includes these lines of tribute, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at he name of Jesus every knee should bow…and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Phil. 2:9)

The words come from Gesangbuch, Muenster, 1677, and the melody is attributed to H.A. Hoffman von Fallersleben’s Schleische Volkslieder, 1842. Stanza three is set to an original melody provided by the arranger.
