You’re invited to enrich your devotional life through God’s gift of music. The words are provided for those who like to ponder the poet’s thoughts. Occasionally you’ll hear new chords for a familiar melody, or a different melody for familiar words. “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” is based on Psalm 90 which begins, “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.” Later, the psalmist speaks of the brevity of our lives, reminding us that “time, like a rolling streams bears all of us and we fly, forgotten as a dream….” This contrasting theme is set to a minor melody. Another reason for a different melody is to overcome our tendency to sing overly familiar songs on “auto pilot.” A new melody could help us be more engaged in the message.
You’re encouraged to share this and others who might be blessed. Through God’s gift of music and technology we can reach beyond the walls of separation caused by the pandemic.
